Motivated, ambitious and committed young professionals are coming together to connect and fuel collaboration within the world of transportation.
Young Professionals in Transportation (YPT) was established in Washington, D.C. in 2008. Ten years later, the organization has expanded to nearly 40 major metropolitan areas – and continues to grow.
David Moyer is a Senior Project Engineer at McMahon Associates Inc., in Boston and is the Chief Executive Officer of YPT International. He invests his passion for transportation into a variety of projects including roadway design, developing traffic management strategies, and public transit projects. David came across YPT while working as a transportation engineer two years after graduating from North Eastern University in 2011. “I was looking for a way to get more involved and meet people in the transportation industry,” David said. “I went to a happy hour event and ended up meeting a lot of people.”
Via seminars, meetings, and happy hours primarily across the U.S and Canada, YTP aims to provide:
- A welcoming & progressive environment
- Personal & professional development
- Networking opportunities
- Career guidance
- Fellowship
“A lot of people within transportation are really motivated and they care about what they’re doing – they really care about making a difference in their community,” David said. “I found that YPT is a great way to meet a lot of young transportation professionals whether they're engineers, transportation planners, work in the government, or in the tech field – just anybody at all.”
YPT meetings offer an open space to discuss current topics, ideas, and issues within transit and transportation. Recently, at a Transit Oriented Drinks happy hour event hosted by the Atlanta chapter of YPT, individuals came together to network and build relationships between students and allied professionals. From transportation planners and engineers to MARTA public service volunteers, we spoke to a few YPT’s at the event who offered their insights:
Are you a young professional, or just want to get more involved in transit’s impact on your community? Visit the YPT website to learn more and check out other chapters near you, or even start your own chapter. There is no age-restricted definition of "young” in YPT. Anyone is welcome to participate!
